Movement is medicine!

Flexing is fun sometimes!
Flexing is fun sometimes!

I know, it doesn’t feel like it right now, but this relentless January is providing us with a rare opportunity to get into the gym and experience the greatness of strength training and the excellence that it can bring into our lives.

It’s counter-intuitive, I know. If you’re tired and don’t want to go outside, you’re not alone. Every morning, I wake up and I want to crawl back into bed.

I. Just. Don’t. Want. To. Get. Up. It’s a sickness.

That said, I still get into the gym on a daily basis. There’s no choice in the matter for me. I am not, nor have I ever been, a good sleeper. It’s incredibly hard to turn off my ADHD brain when it’s time for bed, and has been like for more than 40 years.

Weight training and working out have changed my life. That’s not hyperbole. The endorphins I feel after lifting, the latent, light muscle soreness that come after lifting and the mental rewards I feel after I get a great workout in are very real, and very spectacular.

The benefits, too, are endless. As we age, the concerns around our bodies and how they respond to illness or injury are exacerbated and become more present. That’s why as we age, it becomes more important and not less important to get your lift on, for lack of a better expression.

Bone density increases, thus girding our bones against fractures if we happen to fall. The onset of dementia is delayed and kept at bay and as we train more and more, our immune system improves, thus leaving us less susceptible to catastrophic illness. If a flu hits you and you don’t feel anything, has it really hit you at all?

Food for thought, people!

In all seriousness, it’s not about how you look in the gym, but how you feel when you leave. Some older exercisers are self-conscious about working out in a gym full of young people, but after a while, you come to realize that people in the gym are there to better themselves, much like you are.

Even if you decide that hell is other people, there are solutions!

At Monster Gym, for instance, I have access to the VIP gym, which is only available to private trainers and their clients. It allows my clients to work out in relative privacy and keeps them from feeling overly self-conscious.

I’m blessed in that regard – and so are my clients. In this space over the next few weeks, I’ll introduce you to some of them as we get this blog up, running and brimming with daily updates.

Get in the gym, get to work and feel great. It’s just that easy.
